Old Dogs

PASS THE PUNCH

I've always
detested
all the waste
involved
in the silly little
day to day occasions
which we create
for our amusement

they seem
to be endless

if there's not
a holiday
we are bound
to invent one

just
thinking of all
of these ceremonies
rituals
and traditions
perpetuated
in the name
of god
family
and country
all including
of course
the liberal use
of the dollar
sends me screaming
for a nearest
exit

what is it
that causes us
to need these
celebrations?

can't we find
enough activity
through the course
of a day
to occupy
our tiny minds?

there's so much
misery and suffering
toward which we could better
direct our attentions
instead of fretting
about the various trappings
of special events
all the decorations
costumes
and catering
consuming so much
time and money
that could easily
be better
expended

think
of the resources
that we could
save

think
of what we could
build and accomplish
if we were not
frittering away
so much material
and energy
in superficial pursuits
such as anniversaries
birthdays
and proms

just think...

nevermind

I've forgotten about
the enormous propensity
the human race holds
for death and destruction
when not otherwise
occupied
with trivialities

if there's not
an occasion
to engage the efforts
and the energies
of people
they tend to turn
upon one another
as can be witnessed
anytime a dictatorship
is lifted
from the necks
on an enslaved populace
freeing them
at first
for the celebration
of their newfound
emancipation
but then
eventually
they begin to fight
amongst themselves
for the released power
and wealth
that comes
with that
freedom

I can see
that I've been
mistaken

I suppose that
every day and night
should be a holiday
heavily laden
with massive preparations
of food
decor
and entertainment

weddings
and the like
should never coincide
but be scheduled
consecutively
around the clock
to busy
a larger number
in the planning
and execution
of such events
leaving little time
or energy
for anything
else

well
if you'll
excuse me

I must
don my costume
and gather my gifts
in preparation
for the continual
celebration
of a fool's
existence
