Old Dogs

INTERVIEW

she
hands me
an application
and I find my place
amongst the thirty prospects
in the packed waiting room
all milling about sharply
hoping for a shot
at the solitary
opening

I lean
against
an open space
on the too-white wall
and fill out the form
on a shaky clipboard
copying directly from
a more comprehensive
and extensive
resume

back
at the desk
I give both items
to the harried secretary
who carelessly shuffles
my precious parchments
along with the rest
on her cluttered
desk

time
plods along
eating up my morning
all the decent magazines
are already taken
so I decide
to pass the interim
by devising a new plan
of deliberate
inaction

finally
she calls my name
and my chance
arrives

I am led
down a hall
to a large
impressive office
and without a word
she hands the man
behind the ornate desk
my small collection of papers
and then disappears
leaving us alone
in the
silence

he doesn't
even bother
to look up at me
he doesn't have to
you understand
it's a buyer's market
he shoves my credentials
into his out box
pivots in his chair
and peers
out the window
to my
right

"so...
tell me
a little about
yourself"
