Old Dogs

GAMES

I'm not really
much of a
sports fan

I do prefer
the team sports
to individuals
even though
I have no
favorite teams
never quite certain
who's in first place
who's having a hot streak
or who's recently signed
a multi-million dollar
contract for
whom

I do try
to watch enough
sporting events
(on TV
never in person
uncomfortable in a crowd
of actual fans)
so that I can participate
in most conversations
concerning whatever
the seasonal activity
an attempt to be
one of the guys
giving myself
something to talk about
other than failure
doom and death
my usual
topics

my
primary pleasures
derived from any
gaming activity
are watching
the colors
  bright uniforms
  flashing about
  tropical fish
  in an electronic
  aquarium
the speed
  flurries of activity
  the more players
  the better
  ant farms
  in cocaine
  frenzy
and the numbers
  bringing order
  in retrospect
  to the chaos
  the death count
  after the
  hunt

none of which
forms the motivation
of a true purist
but nonetheless
holds my meager
interests

I seldom watch
an entire game
selecting enough to savor
slices of near perfection
when fortunate enough
to observe them
then turning off
the glowing set
rather than suffer
further mediocrities
the kind that already
plague my
everyday
existence

the only
sporting aspect
that will maintain
my limited attention span
is the infrequent occurrence
of a surprising upset
watching a group
of unlucky
untalented
and unliked individuals
pull it all together
if only for once
to defeat an obviously
superior and favored
opponent

I know
that it's the classic
underdog syndrome
but while I may not know
who occupies the top spot
on any given day
I do usually know
who's
in
the
cellar

my brothers
of broken
hope
