FLUSH ME

it's difficult
to know
what to do
these days
environmentally

there's
so much waste
so much pollution
and so little hope
of ever making
a lasting change
in our hostile
lifestyles

the way
which we live
finally becomes
the way
which we
shall
die

all about
the prosaic home
it's impossible to choose
from the best
of the multitude
of bad alternatives
since everything
that we touch
has some
malevolent influence
upon the planet
on which
we reside

even
the most innocent
of modern daily activities
can eventually poison
the water
that we drink
the air
that we breathe
and the ground
where we
will finally
be disposed

simply
cleaning the dishes
becomes an unsolvable
conundrum

the dishwasher
wasting electricity
and gallons of water
expelling detergents
into the sewer system
and probably
into our
drinking water
as well

washing
the dishes
in the sink
at least eliminate
the power element
but still leaves
the other dilemmas
with which
to deal

paper plates
and plastic utensils
although saving both
water and electricity
greatly increase
the output
of solid waste
into the ecosystem
not to mention the energy
and material expended
to manufacture
them

perhaps
we should just scrape
our dinnerware
and wipe with rags
hoping that no one
in the family
comes down
with diarrhea
food poisoning
or some other
lingering
ailment

damn
I feel like
stuffing a stack
of paper plates
down the drain
followed by a bottle
of dish washing detergent
cranking up the water
flicking on the disposal
and the leaving the house
to drive to a restaurant
where they can worry
or not
about the ecological
implications

of course
that'll burn fuel
and pollute the atmosphere
and slowly choke the life
out of me
and my
kind

OK then

I'll give up
eating entirely
it's a nasty habit anyway
creating much more waste
than it's worth

please excuse
the corpse
