Old Dogs

FESTIVAL

it sounded
like a good ticket
on a slow
Saturday night

so we shuffled
on down
got a couple of seats
and anxiously awaited
the lonely music
of the cheated
South

but
the feel
was all wrong
the local blues club
sponsoring the event
was a calm collection
of balding middle aged
white office types
the audience
also mostly white
and the three
featured acts that night
were two 30-something
white musicians
and an aged
black woman
the questionable Queen
of the Delta Blues
mainly there
for the photo op

not a promising
musical combination
for a purported
emotional
celebration

I'm not saying
that it has
to be black
to be the blues
but in Tulsa OK
on a dispassionate night
it definitely
would have
helped

I'm also
not saying
that I know
or could ever know
what the blues are about
but I have heard
the music before
and it made me feel
something
something outside
of myself
something
that I could have
never known
alone

that evening
they sang
about feeling
but I don't think
that it was
their own

which left
me
nothing
but blue
