I am in
a long room
that seems both
a living room

a bedroom
combined

I am looking
at the back
of a woman
in hospital scrubs

she appears
to be folding
clothes

“please
help him
with his shoes

I dressed
him”

I turn
the other direction
to see
Grandpa Otteman
sitting
in a chair

smiling
sheepishly
up
at me

he has
brand new
running shoes
on his feet

but the strings
are untied

askew

I bend
down

start
to tie
the right

“shoes
are nice”

he says

“but they
would be better
with socks”

sure enough
his feet
are bare
inside

I look
around
but see none
within reach

the nurse
keeps her back
to us

offering
no comment

Grandpa puts
a shaking hand
on my shoulder

apparently
laughing
at the ridiculousness
of his situation
