with a group
of people
standing
in a living room

well

they are
talking

and as
is usual
I am
listening

smiling

nodding
as if
I know
something about
what is being
discussed

I know
nothing

distractedly
I look
around

notice
a woman
sitting alone
on a couch
that faces
away

she twists
around
to look
at us

I recognize
Lisa

she sees
me

smiles

“have you
been
to see
that movie
yet?”

she asks

I remember
talking about
going to the movies
with her
before
she married

I don’t
answer

I reach
instead
for her hand

hoping
that she doesn’t
flinch away

the way
that she did
the last time
that I tried
to touch her

she looks
at my hand
covering
hers

then back
at me
with a sad
look
upon her
face

I want her
to see
the movie
with me

but she
has always
known that
