Andy
from work
and I
are standing
upon the roof
of a residence

we are looking
down
into a narrow
backyard

made difficult
to see
by tall bushes
against
the house

but bordered
for definition
in the rear
by a tall
privacy fence

we need
to jump

I know
that we have
jumped
before

but the drop
seems
too great

I hesitate

finally
Andy jumps

lands
in a cloud
of dust
in crouch

he straightens

turns

and looks
up
at me
in anticipation

finally
I make my
leap

crumple
to my knees
as I hit
the ground

but I’m
fine

I stand
to see
a shelf
fastened
to the fence

upon it
is a basket
loaded
with small
gifts

much like
an Easter
basket

I see
cards

notes

all with
my name
upon them

apparently
from many
people

much unlike
an Easter basket
a pint
of Black Label
is included

wrapped
in a letter
from my
Coast Guard buddy
Dooley

I unfold
the letter
to see what
he says

he knows
that I
no longer
drink
