I am standing
amidst
a fair amount
of cattle

confined
within
a stock pen

all housed
inside
a huge barn

a man
in uniform
and a cowboy hat
seems to be scanning
each cow

much as if
looking
for a microchip
beneath the fur
of a lost pet

“we have
to make sure
that every animal
is harvested
properly”

I wonder
how they
can tell the future
from a present
scan

these bovines
still
quite thriving

he works
his way
through the herd

“there
are some
back here
not meant
for market?”

I barely
hear his question
from the other
side
of the building

now only able
to see his
hat
over the animals
in between

this
must be
the Pearcy's
place

I am merely
an observer

a guest

so I do
not know
from whom
he expects
an answer

just
the two
of us here
with the
cows
