I am in
a group gathered
about a woman
handing out
weapons

rifles

pistols

grenades

handheld rocket
launchers

but to most
I see her give
small electronic
boxes

silver
with many
switches

flashing
lights

an LED
display

I look
at the devices
being carried
away

somehow
knowing
that they are set
to self
destruct

I get
in front
of her

she answers
my unasked
question

“they are
not soldiers

they are
better used
as weapons”

she holds
out
a rifle
for me

nods
conspiratorially

I hesitate

wanting
to tell her
that I have
no idea
how to shoot

she gives
me
a questioning
look

but
not really
wanting
to blow up
right away

I take
the gun

turn
and walk
through
the crowd

hoping
that no one
asks
why I
am trusted
to fight
