I am riding
a skateboard

pumping
up
a hill

surprised
that I am able
to proceed
so effortlessly

at the top
is a playground

no one else
is there

I find
a picnic table
and try
to remember
some tricks
that I’ve seen
kids do

the problem
is
that the table
is very close

too close
really

to a precipitous
edge

I know
that if I miss
at an attempt
that I could
easily
lose my balance

tumble
over the
side

I roll along
the edge

come
to a steep
stairway

see
two men
climbing up
toward me

as they near
I am surprised
to see
that one
is Andy Griffith

in his
sheriff’s
uniform

he is talking

laughing with
the other

my dad

I know
that I must be
in Hooper

on the hill
where my grandmother
lived

but I have
no idea
what Andy
is doing here

I think
that he must
be dead
