I am looking
down
at a roadmap

having
a difficult time
straightening the material
on whatever surface
that it covers

I look
around
a living room
trying to find
some objects
to help me
keep the chart
flat

I see nothing
of immediate use
so continue
to struggle
plotting
my journey

not really
recognizing
the cities

the towns

the highways
that I am
seeing

“are you
going
to wear it
or waste
more time
trying to figure
where you're
going?”

I hear
a woman say
from behind
me

now realizing
that this plat
is not
on paper

that I am
studying
fabric

a shirt

probably
nonexistent
landmarks

imaginary
destinations

I am traveling
nowhere

“come on”

she insists

“put it on
and let’s
go”

I obey

she
is my
map
