I am driving
down
a highway
at night

rushing
through
the rolling
hills

I am going
fast

much
too fast

I am aware
of my speed
because I cannot
stay in my lane
as I barely
hug
the curves

I know
that someone
could be coming
the other
way

around
the next
corner
perhaps

but I
don’t care

I am in
a hurry

even though
I don’t know
why

in my mind
I picture
a straightaway

through
a flat
terrain

just over
one of these
hills

someplace
where
my speed
would serve
a less dangerous
purpose

to get
me
to where
I am going
on time

but over
each hill
appears
another

curving up

curving
down

as I see
no end
to this dark
and risky
journey
