an open box

looking
down
inside

I walk up
and tell them
that I’ll need
to check
their license

“in there”

one points
into
the opening

I get
on my knees
and reach
inside

I see tools

rags

garbage

and feel
something wet
as I reach
deeper

I know
that it’s
blood

that there’s
something dead
toward
the bottom

I keep reaching
hoping
that I find
the paperwork

before
I touch
a furry
body
