I am behind
the front counter
at some sort
of store

customers
are milling about
the narrow
building

“you’re late”

the young
woman
standing
next to me
says

“you’d better
get ready”

I see
that she
is wearing
a company
smock

that I
am not

in a hurry
I turn
to walk
down a long
hallway

I begin
taking off
my shirt

then
hesitate
knowing
that she’ll see
my tattoos

a bit
embarrassed
but also
almost wanting
her
to see them

to think
that I am more
than just some
harmless
old man

that I may
have had
at least
a more dangerous
past
