I am in
a line
of people
walking
through the
snow

being led
by a tall man
in ski gear

wearing
everything
but the skis

as he hikes
us up
a mountain
trail

he describes
the icy ridge
to where
we are
headed

“like
a knife’s edge
really

it’s very
important
that you keep
a good grip
on you poles

plant them
firmly
on either
side”

I perceive
the narrow
ridge
in my mind

flanked
by almost
infinite descents

severe winds
creating
snow clouds
on the leeward
slope

I look
at my hands
to see
flimsy yardsticks

seeing
others
with brooms

rakes

pool cues

and equally
unsuitable
gear

I am
now feeling
the fear
of our impending
adventure
