I am chipping
ice
from the top
of a box
frozen
to the top
of my car

I am being
very careful
not to damage
the flimsy
cardboard

only removing
enough
of the ice
to open
the container

finally
I am able
to carefully
flip the cover

see that
the interior
is empty

I know
now
that I placed
the box
there

I need
a place
to hide
some documents

I reach
inside
my coat

sure enough
there is a bundle
of paperwork
there

I place
the stack
inside

replace
the top

I pull
a bottle
of water
from a pocket

pouring
the liquid
over the box
knowing
that the cold
will freeze
it shut

I grab
a shovel
to heap snow
over the car top
obliterating
all evidence
of concealment

I should
be safe
to cross
the border
tomorrow
