Dreams 2022

Dream 57
(2/20/2022)

I am at
Midwest Publishing
but the office
is set up
like a classroom

with Will’s
desk
in the teacher’s
position
up front

we are all
typing away
at keyboards

busy
with our
tasks

Will shuffles
through paperwork
brow creased
in search

he seems
to find
what he wants

stands up

and walks
toward me

when he
reaches my
table

he says

“good thing
that I didn’t wait
for you to do
this for me!”

in a
VERY LOUD
VOICE

(the only
kind
that he ever
used)

then tosses
down
a page
from a legal
pad

I grab it
for a look

see
indecipherable
notes

(the only
kind
that he ever
made)

and a
rough sketch
of an umbrella
apparently blown
inside out
from the wind

he goes
back
to the front
of the room

satisfied smirk
upon his face

leaving me
to be stared at
by my coworkers

I am embarrassed
but begin thinking
about
the situation

then
become
angry

stomp up
to his desk

and in equal
decibels
tell him that
I have only
missed
the one day
in all
of the years
I have been
working here

and the times
that I covered
for his mysterious
absences
were uncountable

he glances
at the paper
that I have
thrown back
at him

then looks
up
with a smile

“I guess
that you’re
right”

he admits

~

I am in
the same
room

but curled up
under a blanket
lying
upon a couch

my back
to the room

I want
to get up
in order to go
to the restroom

but do not
want the others
to see my
teal boxers

I slowly
sneak a look
behind me

see that
everyone
has left

and realize
that I have
stayed
past closing

again
