I am talking
to a short
blond woman

she’s pretty

very pretty

but her
speech
seems rambling

disconnected

I know
that the distraction
for both of us
is her recent
abortion

it’s all
that I can
think about
as I attempt
to talk
to her

I wonder
if it’s all
that she thinks
about
as she tries
to relate
to others

I’m not
even sure
what we’re saying
as we stand
here

we both seemed
removed
from our
conversation

someone’s
dead
who shouldn’t
be

and I
don’t know
how
we get past
that
