Dream 48

I wake
up

get out
of bed

look around
a huge
split level
bedroom

it’s very
bright
in here

just as
I think that
an automatic blind
lowers
over a large
picture window

I hear Mom
making noises
in the kitchen

I wonder
how she
can afford
such luxury
on her retirement
income

then I remember
that she
is dead

maybe
some sort of
death benefit
augments
her income

I really
am not ready
to be awake

I get back
into bed

hold
a pillow
over my head
to further
the darkening
effect

but
feel something
moving
between my face
and the pillow
case

I hold
the pillow
away
and see two
large spiders
chasing each
other

like squirrels
around
a tree

completely
oblivious
to me

I don’t
think that Mom
will appreciate
having such creatures
in her home

I set
the pillow
carefully upon
the floor

cover my
head
with the sheet
instead

and try
to go
back
to sleep
