I am sitting
at a long
table

near a far
corner
from the
speaker

“we have
a large territory
to cover
today”

she says

“we’ll break
up
into groups
of two

and you’ll
cover
your specific
areas”

I look
around
at all
the others

recognizing
no one
whose face
I can see

a few
sitting
on my side
at the opposite
end
are blocked
from me

“does anyone
not
have a partner?”

I am
the only one
to raise
a hand

I don’t
know
what I’m
doing here

“Lisa
why don’t
you
take him
with you?”

I lean over

look
down
the length

and see
that yes

it’s the Lisa
I know

“no
I’ll be fine
on my own”

she says

I now
get the impression
that she’s known
all along
that I
was here

but has
purposely
hidden herself
from my view

“don’t
be silly”

our leader
says

“he doesn’t
know where
to go

he needs
someone
to show
him”

I stand

begin walking
toward
the exit

Lisa
rises
reluctantly

I hold
the door
open
for her

“you go
ahead”

she says

“and don’t
touch me”

I walk out
onto
the porch

trying
to remember
what I had ever
done
to her

to make her
treat me
this way
