Glen
and I
are trying
to test
circuit boards

but the
fixture
doesn’t seem
to work

he decides
that we are
missing
a connector
of some sort

we go
into another
room
and he begins
searching through
the hundreds
of drawers
in a large
cabinet

I stand
at door

then turn
looking back
at our
machine

the display
screen
is blank

I ask him
if we remembered
to load
the program

he smiles

then walks
past me
back
to the test
area

when we
arrive
Rick is there
looking
at our setup

“did you see
the coating
on the connectors?”

he asks
us

as he points
to large
metal bars

standing
on end

the topmost
covered
in a lumpy
clear layer
of sticky
substance

I look
at Glen
who is not
paying
attention

typing
instead
on the keyboard

not smiling
anymore
