I am walking
a dog

a wild
unruly
Lab mix
of some sort

I am trying
to get him
to heel

I wonder
why I don't
have a
leash

he circles

he runs
off
a distance

he stops

a large pickup
with HUGE tires
slows
beside us

I look
up
at the passenger
side
window

at this
angle
I can't see
the driver
who says

"you need
a leash!"

I tell
him
that I am
working
on it

I am now
in a big
front yard

the grass
is brown

trampled
down

there are
borders of sticks
looking as if
they were
washed up
by floodwater

the same
dog
is running
about

I pick
up a stick

throw it
for him

but he
goes instead
to one of the
piles

picks up
a small branch
from the
bunch

wags
his tail
looking
at me

then
the same
truck
stops
in the street

"he's getting
better!"

the driver
says

I tell him
that we're still
working
on it

he pulls
ahead
to the next
house

yells
at the woman
picking up debris
from her
lawn

"where's
your husband?"

he asks
her

what a nosy
asshole
