return
to school”

a woman’s
voice
from outside
the door
insists

I am
in a small
room

a very
small
room

barely larger
than a closet

all over
the floor
at my feet
are puppies

each
black
and white

mostly
black
though

“get them
ready
NOW!”

she yells

I start
picking up
the little dogs
two
at a time

one
in each
hand

setting them
on a shelf
about waist
high
to me

after
I have placed
quite a few

l look
at them
again

they
have the faces
of children

as soon
as I notice
this
they all
begin talking
to me
at once

their voices
mixed
together
in a indecipherable
cacophonous
melee

I understand
none
of them

“AREN’T YOU
READY YET?!?!?!”

I understand
her
very well
