I am at
a small shop
of some sort

waiting
in line
at the register

a woman
stands
at an elevated
counter
checking out
customers

as my turn
comes
she pauses

looks over
my head
to the door

“there
they go”

she says

I turn
to see
a man and woman
attempting
to leave
without paying

the cashier
steps down

goes around
me

as I spin
to watch her
I see that
the store
is just white
walls

empty
but for
the line
of people

I look
down
at my hands

holding
nothing
