Aunt LaNell
is setting
the table
for four

I sit
at one end
watching

“how was
your trip?”

she asks

but I don’t
really know
how I got
here

“everyone
should be home
soon”

she says

there should
be five
of us
so I wonder
why we seem
one plate
short

then I remember
that she is
paralyzed

cannot
feed herself

I feel
that there is
something
that I
should be
doing

but just
sit
and watch

“how was
your trip?”

a woman
whom I
do not know
asks

I tell her
that I got
to have dinner
with my aunt

uncle

and two
cousins

I then realize
that I forgot
to return
my rental car
before flying
back

I dread
having to call
my poor aunt
to ask her
to do that
for me
