I enter
a large
kitchen

many
types of food
fill the surface
of an island
counter

several people
are standing
there

no chairs

no plates

so they
are eating
directly
from serving
platters

Dad
is trying
to gather all
that he can
hold

in his hands

in his arms

I wonder
how he will
manage
to get it all
to the car

we need
to get going

but I know
that he’ll
be hungry
on the road

so I
wait

treading
the divide
between
patience

impatience

wanting
him
to get everything
that he
needs

but
not helping
him
at all
