I am sitting
at a desk
in a classroom

books
notebook
pencils
pens
cover
the surface

I am writing
but stop
no longer
remembering
what I was
doing

I look up
to see
an empty
classroom

I look out
into the
also empty hall

across
the way
is another classroom

both
are open
but a column
blocks a clear view
of the one person
sitting there

I lean
way
to the right
to see Suzie
sitting in front
of her own collection
of school
paraphernalia

I wave
to get her
attention

she leans
to her left
in order
to see me

she smiles

waves back

now
holding a stapler
I tell her
that I'm going to staple
my ears
to my head

laughing
a bit
at the ridiculousness
of the statement

“why?”

she asks

I say
that they stick
out
too far

she frowns

twists back
out of sight

I yell that I’m only
kidding

but she
stays
hidden
from me
