it appears

a resale shop

stuffed
with all
sorts
of items

all sorts
of people

I have
a book
in my hand
waiting
to check out

I see
no register

a woman
in a long dress
stands
near the door

accepts
money
from the departing
customers

there’s
a black man
in front of me
waiting
as well

suddenly
another black man
appears

sticks
a pistol barrel
in the ribs
of the first

the man
with the gun
has an intense
face

angry

determined

but says
nothing
to the other

no one
else
seems
to notice

I do
not know
what to
do

what
to say

as the
gunman
now looks
at me
