I am crouched
behind a bush
in the large yard
of a large house

a woman
is beside me
in the night

there is shooting
in our direction
from the house

the bullets
making
loud thuds
as they drill
into the lawn

we can see
silhouettes
of people
with rifles
along
the flat
rooftop

standing
in the balconies

the more
that they
shoot at us

the more
furious
I become

fuck this

I tell the
woman

let’s go see
what their problem
is

she grabs
my hand

we run
toward
the front
entry

rush
through
the door

I begin
climbing
stairs

but the
woman
stays behind
on the ground
floor

in the hallway
of the upper story
I hear people
talking
on a balcony

I enter
a dark room

light
from somewhere
illuminates
the group
outside

I see
well dressed
men

women

as if
they were
attending
a party

“did we
get them?”

one man
asks

“I can’t
see
from here”

says
another

suddenly
they begin
walking away

around
a corner

I step out
just as a woman
in a long dress
is about
to follow
the rest

why
are you shooting
at us?

I ask her
angrily

“we’re just
having
some fun”

she says

I am so
mad
that I struggle
to say
the worst word
that I can
call her

I yell
at her

I repeat

she does
look stricken

I feel
bad
for being so
mean
to her
