I am standing
in a field

looking
at a smallish
hot air
balloon

instead
of a basket
there is a wooden
plank

perhaps
four feet
long

a foot
wide

suspended
from the
bright red
already floating
inflated portion

I see
an anchoring
line

follow
with my eyes
to see a man
in the distance

yelling
encouragement
to an unseen
other

“are you
ready?

you can
do it!

hang on!”

I turn
back
to the balloon

now seeing
a low slung
Bassett-type dog
balanced
upon the board

then
the rope
is released

the animal
begins
to rise

how odd

I think

I’ve never
seen anything
like this

I begin
to hear
a whimpering

to see
a worried look
across the canine’s
face

the creature
is now well
out of reach

I see
the end
of the line
dancing
maybe 50 yards
away

also
leaving
the ground

I begin
running
as fast
as I can

all the while
with my eyes
to the sky

in case
I need to catch
a falling
dog
