my home
is filled
with workers

they seem
to be mostly
dismantling

wiring

drywall

floor coverings

“these windows
need
to come out!”

I follow
the forceful voice
to see Donna
standing
in the midst
of it all

“it’s all
right here!”

she points
down
toward a drawing
board

I wonder
if all of this
is worth
the effort

seeing that
the house
will soon
be sold

I feel
a hand
on my left
shoulder

turn to see
my neighbor
Terri
standing
above me

I realize
that I am
crouching
in what was
the living room

in front
of the hole
that used to be
a picture window

“are you sure
that you want
to do all of this
to your old
house?”

I say

then tell
her
to shush

afraid
that my sister
may hear
us
