I am standing

talking
to Margie
in the living
room
of her apartment

it seems
to be morning

we are dressed

getting ready
to go
somewhere

I am telling
her
about walking
across the river
the day before

going
downtown
to the place
where I used
to live

that I haven’t
been there
in so long
that I was surprised
to find it
so very much
the same

as I am
telling her this
I am picturing
a map
of the walk
in my head

she’s looking up
at me
from where
she sits
on the arm
of the couch

nodding

with a slightly
questioning look
upon her face

seeing
her expression
I remember
that I haven’t
touched her
this morning

I lean
down

put my arm
around her

give her
a kiss

she smiles

seeming
happily
surprised
