Dogs 2020

xiv
(2/9/2020)

another
day
in the desert

another
sweaty
dusty walk

then
without warning
Faris is shaded
by a small
cloud

he see’s
the sun scorched
earth
at the perimeter

but he stands
momentary
in a shadow

cooled
by minor
degrees

shading
his eyes
to the still bright
sky

in order
to see
which way
his benefactor
was traveling

since he
had
no direction
of his own

he would
follow the path
of his fluffy
friend

down
the slope
past his usual perch
upon his favorite
ridge

leading
down
to the highway

a road
that he had
never
crossed

as soon
as his sandals
met
the smooth
hard surface

the cloud
had outpaced
him

leaving him
exposed
to the daylight
once again

the sunlight
reflecting brightly
from something
nearing
in the distance

he turned
quickly
to begin
the climb
to the heights

as if
guilty
of a crime

his only
transgression
being the need
of solitude

to escape
those gruesome
human vagaries
of belief

he would
be seen

but he
would not
acknowledge
such vehicular
presence

he heard
the lowering whine
of tires
behind him

the crunch
of gravel

as the rocks
also shifted
beneath
his ascent

the ghost
of his past
seeming to slow
for his retrieval

to reclaim
a corpse
not quiet
forgotten
