Dogs 2020

xiii
(1/31/2020)

“don’t look
into the sun
my son”

his mother
had told
him

“you’ll
see spots
for days”

now alone
in the desert

the sun
now seemed
Faris’s only
companion

shading
his eyes
seems a sleight
to his bright
friend

he turned
his head
toward
its light

he stared
as long
as he could
stand

his eyes
stinging
unbearably

tears
falling
from his
face

finally
he had
to avert
his gaze

but
he did not
see spots

only
one

the size
of Allah
