Barium Breakfast
(9/14/2020)

I sit
in my car
in the clinic
parking lot

the waiting
room
already over
its COVID
quota

my system
attempting to ingest
a disgusting
vanilla flavored
contrasting
solution

preparing
for a CT scan
of my questionable
pancreas

at least
the morning
is pleasant

the surroundings
bucolic

better
than staring
at my fellow
masked humans

I watch
the breeze
caress
the trees

hardly wondering
how soon
the growth
upon my
targeted organ
might kill me

~

later inside

awaiting
for the results

I listen
to a young couple
discussing
an upcoming
furniture purchase

furniture
that will far
outlast me

but the
banal banter

their irritating
repartee
is a reminder

that dying
will not be
so tragic
after all
