UNSEEN FRIENDS
(6/6/19)

when
there's a good
southerly breeze
they know
that I am
here

during
my strolls
through the
parking lot

I hear
their barks
of acknowledgment

not those
agitated noises
that they make
for the postman

or for the
yard tards

but of a
more relaxed
"hi, how are you"
nature

their owner's
cinder block
privacy fence
has prevented us
from ever seeing
each other

however
they recognize
my scent
after so many
years

sensing me
in a different
way

and I
can distinguish
the three
of them
by their now
very familiar
voices

I talk
to them
in return

we probably
view
quite different
images
in our minds
than reality
would support

makes
no difference
really

vision
can be misleading
as well

we recognize
each other
just fine
by the means
readily
available

until
one day
when we shall miss
our certain
smells

our respective
sounds

as our
absences
will elude all
earthly senses
entirely
