SPRING BABY
(6/22/19)


a young
squirrel
sat on the curb
this morning

still
a scrawny
tail

holding
whatever morsel
it had discovered

taking
careful bites

as I pulled up
in my scary
old car
he or she
scurried
to the nearest
tree

but returned
to its favored
dining position
once I came
to a stop

already
a bit desensitized
to humans

to motorized
transportation

not
a good sign

the street
in front
of our offices
is often littered
with furry
corpses

animals
without the proper
respect
for moving
vehicles

I stood
maybe ten
feet away
from the little
creature

big brown
eyes
assessing
my careful
movements

paws
and mouth
still working
on breakfast

I said
good morning

suggested
a warning

then went
inside
to work

just another
semi-domesticated
inhabitant

trying
to get
by
