SCUTTLED OCCUPATIONS
(6/27/19)

the business
sputters

spurts

giving off
last
dying gasps

the bills
can no longer
be paid

but we
struggle
on

paddling

treading water

going through
the strokes
of commerce

making
whatever arrangements
necessary

we have
accepted
our fate

like someone
in the final
stages
of drowning

gone
is the panic
of that initial
sinking
feeling

that fear
of failure

our manners
are relaxed

easy going

we smile
instead
of sweat

even though
the waters
churn
with blood
from the
sales
sharks

the revenue
piranhas

the creditor
barracudas

that sanguineous
hue
no longer
seems
our own

mentaly
we walk free
on the dry land
of existence

we are
free

our elemental
natures
intact

we realize
that we will
continue
to function

long after
the light
from the surface
has dimmed
in the depths
