Dogs 2019

ONE MINUTE LATE
(3/11/19)

I open
my eyes

roll
over

look
at the clock

5:31

I had
forgotten
to set
the alarm
last night

in the
bad old
drinking days
I would've slept
until
almost noon

but after
19 years
of sobriety

19 years
on the same
job

the programming
is fairly well
set

I get
up

get ready

leave
the house
at 6:01

make
the short
commute
to work

driving
the usual
speed

no need
to rush

unlock
the doors
at 6:16

to walk
through
an empty
building

where
no one
would've known
if I were
60 minutes
late

rather
than 60
seconds

no one
of course
but me
