MAN HOLDING TROUT
(2/13/19)

he shows
me
the picture

his hands
full
of fins

gills

scales

river
in the background

"you see

this
is what it's
all about

getting out
in nature

really
experiencing
life"

I suppress
a smile

the image
reminds me
of a ridiculous
Monty Python
sketch

a man
with a bigger
fish
is sure
to come along

I would
know this reference
because I spend
too much time
indoors
watching TV

"you spend
too much time
indoors
watching TV"

he says

"or walking
aimlessly about
the neighborhood

you need
the wilderness

you need
adventure

to really
feel alive"

I don't
tell him
that I've pulled
salmon
bare handed
out of rapid

frigid

Alaskan streams

feeling as if
I had been
in a fight
for my life

so his
pole and net
exploit
seems rather
tame

rather
lame

"I've
had a long
day
at the office"

I tell him

"I'm going
for a walk"

he shakes
his head

"life
is passing
you by
my friend

you had
better get
out there
while
you still
can"

I wave
him off

putting
one foot
in front
of the other

getting
out there
the only way
that I know
how
