DEATH IN NUMBERS
(5/15/19)

I heard
the commotion
before I saw
anything

the sound
of apparently
hundreds
of agitated
birds

I looked
to the trees
as they
erupted

a huge
beautiful
hawk

grasping
a gray
bundle
of feathers
in its talons

struggling
to take off
carrying
the victim

the flock
in pursuit
swarming
the predator

diving

harrying

until
the hawk
dropped its prey
to elude
the multitude

the still
fluttering bundle
falling
to a neighbor's
porch

a handful
of the group
broke off
to follow
the near meal
down
to a landing

while
the majority
pursued
the attacker
into the
distance

lessons
aplenty
I'd imagine

but after
a long day

a long
walk

I was not
The Great
Scorer

merely
an apathetical
observer

nonetheless
noting
that the sleek
consummate killer
looked fairly
healthy

not missing
many opportunities
to feed
upon stragglers

of any
variety

the mob
had won
today

but without
its burden
the raptor
soared easily
away
from the crowd

resuming
the hunt

circling
slowly
back
