BLACK BOWS
(7/13/19)

back
in the bad
old days

when most
of the money
was spent
on drink

the only
sober entertainment
that I could afford
was a library
card

I would search
the shelves
for interesting
titles

once found
I would read
a few pages

few
held up

but to
see something
like

In Cold Blood

The Razor's Edge

Sometimes A Great Notion

Journey To The End Of The Night

Zen And The Art Of Motorcycle Maintenance

Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas:
A Savage Journey To The Heart
Of The American Dream

upon
the spines

you just knew
that you had
something
before you
even opened
the covers

however
there were
many more
disappointments

my method
was obviously
flawed

some spectacular
titles
covered
dismal dross

then
there were
some arcane
lackluster titles
that were made
quite noteworthy
by brilliant
material

like simple
names
of famous
people

Solipsist

Factotum

Cat's Cradle

Point Counter Point

the remaining
headings
seemed careless
afterthoughts

post hoc
paste ons
by writers
weary
from the work

"just call it
anything

it's done"

they must've
told
their publishers

of course
with
the poem

the short
stuff

the title
oft times
starts
the process

is
the process

and
you know
much more
quickly

the good

the bad

best
to wrap
those
plainly

with as
little
adornment
as possible
