Dogs 2019

ALL THE LIGHTS
(5/13/19)

I was
stopped
by every
traffic light
on the way
to work
this morning

frustrating

only eight
on my route
but the odds
seemed likely
that I should
at least
make
one

I attempted
to be philosophical

spiritual

about such
inconvenience

what
could I see
new
at those
intersections?

what had
I been missing
on all those days
when my ways
were green?

as one
who has always
derived comfort
from the concrete
contrivances
of civilization

I did
find
that much

I looked
at the cracked
cement

the buildings

the landscaping

I read
the signs

trying
to ignore
the fact that
the street gods
were against
me

after
the last
light
I had an
open mile
before my turn
to the
office

I pressed
the accelerator
a bit more
than usual

feeling
the release
of speed

no technology
hindering
progress

nothing
to stop me
but myself
