SQUIRREL CODE
(5/23/18)

I snuck up
on one
of the furry rodents
as a child

grabbed it
from behind

held
the creature
up to my face
as if
it were
a kitten

it held still
for a moment

assessing me
with those deep
dark eyes

then
coming to judgment
sunk sharp teeth
into the end
of my thumb

leaping
away
to freedom
as I released
my grip
in shock

there was
quite a bit
of blood

the pain
quickly
followed

then
the tears

I learned
to appreciate
wildlife
from afar

with no need
to possess

no need
to come into
contact

forever separate

together

in my
latter years
this philosophy
seems to apply
quite well
to humans

I was slower
to learn
that their teeth
are sharp
as well

bitten
or not

they are
better
at a distance
