Dogs 2018

MINOR PAINS
(11/30/18)

I sit
in the dentist
chair
paying little
attention
to the discomfort
of the exam

the cleaning

the poking
into my gumline
to gauge
the depth
of degeneration

I think
instead
of no sales
today
at the office

we have
bounced between
black and red
since our owner's
death
over two years
ago

barely
breaking even

there seems
no answer
to return us
to the successes
of the past

no insights
of reinvention
in order to seek
new success

I obsess

I persist

however
I come
to no
conclusions

except that
our business
is in
a constant
state of decay

much
as my
mouth

the dentist
concludes
that I have
one cavity

two cracked
teeth

periodontal
disease

I decline
to spit

choosing
instead
to swallow
my disappointment
as I drive
back
to work

heading
south
