Dogs 2018

HAWK ON THE PORCH
(1/4/18)

the animals
about
the neighborhood
have life
relatively easy
in the winter

birds

squirrels

various
other rodents
bellying up
to the bird feeder
on a daily
basis

and aside
from passing
dogs

a few
prowling
cats

they have
little
to fear

they tend
to forget
the finer points
of the food
chain

so when
a beautifully
feathered
death merchant
wanders into
the urban environment
in search of food

they scatter
for their lives
after a delay
of realization
from their
semi-domesticated
minds

failing
for an instant
to grasp
their genetic
warning signals

later
they seem
to have learned
something
today

one eye
to the sky

one
to the house

they blindly
feel
for the seed
