Dogs 2018

DYING POSSUM
(8/30/18)

dog?

fat cat?

no

some
large

matted

battered

wounded
rodent creature
teetering precariously
upon the scorching
summer street

hit
by a car
probably

what a
sad

pathetic

scene
to see
during the dwindling
daylight hours

what
can I do?

risk
getting bitten
attempting
a rescue?

then
what?

carry it
home?

nurse it
back
to health?

I think
not

I give
the animal
wide berth

lest
it might
charge
in fear

in pain

I hope that
the poor thing
finds some sanctuary
within the shadows
in which
to heal

or to
expire

I continue
my walk

a few
blocks away
I hear a car
idling
as it nears
from behind me

it passes by
slowly
almost riding
the opposite
curb

I see
disgusted faces
peering
through the
windows

as I limp
sweating

disheveled

toward
my
dark place
