CREATURE OF CIVILIZATION'S DECLINE
(7/8/18)

I like
abandoned
buildings

weedy
parking lots

cracked
sidewalks

rusty
street signs

highway markers

company
marquees

the smell
of gasoline

asphalt
from sun-baked
streets

smoke
from unknown
sources

the sound
of vehicles
in the distance

sirens

ignored dogs
barking
for sport

the wind
through trees
mostly dead

I stand
alone

holding
a weathered
gnarled
fence post

perhaps
older than
I

mounted
in chipped concrete
exposed
from the eroding
earth
beneath

the wire
barrier
long since
separated

laying
rusted

corroded

cut

trapping
trash caught
in the process
of blowing
by

I feel
a comfort
in this

no humans
in sight

a few birds
silent
on the power lines
above

scant witness
to the collapsing
efforts
of society

I feel
as if
I'm the last
man leaning

no companion
with whom
to share
this desolation

I was
born
for moments
such as
this
