Dogs 2018

CATCH AND RELEASE
(11/20/18)

they
visit me
every fall

seeking refuge
from the cooling
temperatures

I find
them

crawling
upon the floor

clinging
to curtains

relaxing
on the couch

they were
some tough
motherfuckers
in the spring

in the summer
while outside

but now
they come
begging
for warmth

they have
become
half wasps

harmless
effigies

and even
though
I was stung
this year
for the first
time
in 20

I can't
bring myself
to kill
them

they'll
die indoors
without
assistance

they'll die
out
if I return them

but they
should perish
in their
own element

so
with glass

with magazine

I capture
them

then
shake them
free
upon the front
porch

they move
so slowly
away

but they
move free

I hope
that I am
returned
to my natural
environment
in the end

never
a threat
to anyone

my ashes
drifting lazily
along the surface
with the wind

to disappear
gradually
into the dead
sand
